Puntledge Forest Bog Walk

June 8 @ 11:00 am 1:00 pm

CVLT will be hosting a bog walk in the recently protected section of the Puntledge Forest to learn about bog ecosystems and the plants that inhabit them, such as Labrador tea, western bog laurel, lodgepole pine, skunk cabbage and sphagnum mosses.

Bogs are a class of wetland that play a vital role in the ecosystem. They absorb rainwater, store it underground and then slowly release it into nearby streams. As they absorb runoff and prevent soil erosion, bogs are key to flood management and prevention. Bogs are typically highly acidic and almost all the water that supplies a bog comes from rainfall.

The walk will be led by Marta Donovan, a registered professional biologist who recently retired after 26 years of public service as a botanist with the BC Conservation Data Centre in Victoria. She is a former CVLT Board member and has also taught courses in plant identification, horticulture and ethnobotany.

Difficulty: The walk into the bog is about 1.5 kilometers on a good trail with very little elevation change, 3.0 kilometers return trip. At the bog there is a short board walk trail.

Registration required: please visit bit.ly/bog-walk.
