Comox Valley Land Trust Announces Major Donation From Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society

(Comox Valley, BC) Comox Valley Land Trust (CVLT) is pleased to announce a major contribution of $100,000 from the Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society (PSEFS) in support of their Morrison Headwaters Nature Preserve campaign.

“The unique spring fed waters of Morrison Creek and its tributaries provide ideal spawning and rearing habitat for pacific salmon and trout year-round. We are extremely grateful to the PSEFS for their vital support in protecting and preserving the prime habitat of the Morrison Creek Headwaters.” – Michael Nihls, CVLT Vice-president.

The headwaters of Morrison Creek have been recognized as a top priority for conservation on Vancouver Island. The expansive, undeveloped, wilderness oasis nestled between the Village of Cumberland and the City of Courtenay provides habitat for an extraordinary diversity of wildlife including keystone species such as wide-ranging carnivores, robust runs of wild pacific salmon and numerous species at risk including the globally endangered Morrison Creek lamprey.

The CVLT has until March 31st, 2019 to raise the required funds to complete the sale of this property. The total project budget is $877,500 which includes the cost of the land, taxes, staff time, legal and appraisals. Thanks to the generous contribution from the PSEFS, local community donors and other partners, 88% of the required funds have been raised to date.

“The endowment fund our society manages was created for the sole purpose of helping to conserve our wild salmon stocks,” said Terry Lanigan, chair of PSEFS. “It’s pretty rare to find salmon habitat in this part of the province that has been relatively untouched by human disturbances – and it is certainly worth protecting. We’re very proud to be a part of that.”

The generous contribution from the PSEFS has been integral to the ongoing success of this project.
