Beaufort Old Growth Walk – Waterloo Creek

June 22 @ 9:45 am 2:30 pm

This walk is hosted by Beaufort Watershed Stewards and the Comox Valley Conservation Partnership.

In the Waterloo Creek area, we will be walking through an 18-hectare isolated patch of rare, majestic old forest. This is one of the last mature stands of Grand-fir trees unlogged on the east side of Vancouver Island. Participants will learn about the 3 different ecosystems found here, their key tree species and plants, and why they are so sensitive ecosystems ecologically. Individually named giant Grand-fir trees will be introduced to all and the need to preserve them will be discussed.

There will be two walks: one from 9:45-11:30 AM and the next from 12:45-2:30 PM. The route is mostly along a very established quad trail and a walking path – all on level ground. There will be two sections about 30 meters in length each way walking through unbeaten trails to the base of large trees. Good sturdy footwear is recommended for stepping over a few logs.

The walk is suitable for children 10 years and older. No dogs allowed.

Walk leader: Dave Weaver, president of Beaufort Watershed Stewards.

Registration required.
