Native Plant Walk
July 27 @ 11:00 am – 1:00 pm
This plant identification walk will be led by Elder Barbara Whyte (Billy), Pentlatch Knowledge Keeper and member of the K’ómoks Nation. As a Traditional Knowledge Keeper, Whyte works with food and plants for medicine. She has worked in health care as a nurse for 48 years. Barb participated in the North Island Hospital Development Project for 5 years, coordinating the development of the hospital’s plant medicine garden- the first to be attached to a hospital in Canada.
She is a descendent of the Pentlatch people on her father’s side; her mother was adopted from the residential school orphanage system into the Sahtloot people. Barb comes from Chiefs lineage on both sides of her family.
The walk will take place at qax mot conservation area in the Morrison Creek headwaters from 11 AM to 1PM on Saturday July 27. After the land was protected by the Comox Valley Land Trust in partnership with the CV Regional District in 2019, it was named qax mot by KFN elders, meaning ‘plenty of medicine’ because of the abundance of native plants in the area.
Registration full.
