Puntledge Forest Tour
November 8 @ 10:00 am – 11:30 am
The Puntledge Forest is made up of a maturing stand of trees, predominantly 100 to 120 year old Douglas fir and cedar. The area was logged in 1902 and left to naturally regenerate. The Comox Valley Land Trust (CVLT) is focusing on protecting this forest so it will become the next generation’s old growth forest to enjoy.
The 200-hectare Puntledge Forest is located on the BC Hydro Property, between the Comox Lake Dam and the Puntledge River Diversion Dam. Even though the trees of this well used recreation site are on BC Hydro property, they are part of a Timber Reservation owned by Comox Timber (Manulife Investments). Comox Timber has the legal right to harvest 100 hectares throughout the whole forested area.
The good news is that the Comox Valley Land Trust is in the final phase of a campaign to purchase the timber reservation to extinguish the logging rights and put in place a conservation covenant to protect the trees.
As of May 2024, CVLT has purchased and protected 63 ha of the 100 ha timber reservation.
You are invited to attend a walk in the Puntledge Forest in the Bevan Trails area, the remaining unprotected area. We will share with you the history of the area and the many important environmental values of the Puntledge Forest. Feel free to invite family or friends.
